"Be where your feet are!" - Dr. Kevin Elko and Coach Nick Sabam

Dr. Kevin Elko is a sports psychologist that works with many athletic teams including the University of Alabama's football team as well as many companies that ask him to teach teamwork in professional development sessions with corporate executives.  He encourages us all to "be where our feet are!"  Dr. Elko explains that, expecially in today's times of constant connectivity using iphones, ipads, laptops, and many other devices that distract us.  There are a couple of ways for us to interpret what Dr. Elko says - first of all, we could interpret that literally.  Be where our feet are standing.  If we are at home in the family room watching TV with the family, enjoy the people you are WITH in the room as opposed to texting someone who is not there or looking at Facebook or Instagram.  Enjoy where you are standing and take in all that the present provides to you.  Secondly, Dr. Elko encourages us to be the best we can be today, on THIS team, in THIS class, at THIS school instead of focusing on where we will be NEXT year, NEXT season, or even tomorrow.  He mentions the 2013 University of Alabama's football team and how they failed to reach their full potential because so many of the team members were focused on what round they would be drafted in and what their signing bonus would be....so focused on the NEXT that they didn't maximize THIS.

Does that apply to you?  I believe we all should "be where our feet are" today - right now!

Wordle: Sports Nutrition

Who is Coach Cade Medley and why did he choose to be a teacher and coach?

My name is Samuel "Cade" Medley.  I chose to pursue a Physical Education major so that, through teaching and coaching, I would be able to impact the lives of children the way that my teachers and coaches impacted mine.  I also hope to be able to teach students and athletes the importance of nutrition and exercise in creating a healthy lifestyle. Although participating in sports - both individual and team sports - is a source of personal development and enjoyment, it also provides a foundation for healthy living that can last a lifetime.

As a student-athlete in elementary school, middle school, high school, junior college and division II college, I learned the importance of balancing "student" and "athlete."  I also learned from some fabulous coaches about instruction, motivation, team-building, leadership, self-discipline, perfection, and success.  Unfortunately, at the end of my college career, I also learned about injury and how that impacts personal goals and ambitions.  After being on the MLB draft list 4 out of the last 5 years of my baseball career and while being scouted by several MLB teams, I suffered career impacting strain to my shoulder at the hands of desperate-to-win college coaches.  My goal is to be a teacher and coach that can, through my personal experiences, provide excellent education and instruction for students and student-athletes on how to take care of their body, prepare for their individual or team sport, and learn about motivation, team-building and leadership that they will carry into their life and career regardless of the career path that they choose.

As for my personal information, I was a starting pitcher and two year baseball letterman at the University of North Alabama where I was on the All-Gulf South Conference Team and the Daktronics All-South Region Team.  I was named Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the week and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association South Region Pitcher of the Week while at UNA.  I was also a starting pitcher and two year baseball letterman at Wallace State Community College – Hanceville under Coach Randy Putman.  While at Wallace, I was named to the Alabama Junior College Baseball All Region Team.  I am a 2010 graduate of East Limestone High School where I played both Football and Baseball.  I was a Varsity letterman at the position of quarterback for the Indians for two years.  I was a four year starter on the Varsity baseball team at East Limestone where I received honors such as Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 5A Second Team Second Baseman, Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 5A Honorable Mention Shortstop, All County Team for three years,  All County Player of the Year in 2010, and the Decatur Daily All Region Baseball Team for two years. I also earned team awards such as MVP, Pitcher of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year.  While I was a Varsity starter, the East Limestone Indians baseball team made playoff appearances every year – making it to the final four in 2008.  I was a member of the National Society of Leadership – UNA Chapter, a Wendy’s High School Heisman Nominee, and was voted as Most Athletic male for the Class of 2010.  I am currently a student at Athens State University pursuing a degree in K-12 Physical Education and am engaged to Anna Black, a 2011 East Limestone Alumni and currently a student in the Athletic Training Program at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

If you are a student in one of my classes or a member of the East Limestone Baseball Program, tell me something about you.

Go Indians!!!
